SC agrees to UGC proposal to increase intake

The Supreme Court today recommended the 3rd proposal out of 4 proposals submitted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to facilitate the accommodation of an additional 4,928 students to State universities.

The Bench comprised Chief Justice Shirani A. Bandaranayake, Justices N.G. Amaratunga and K. Sripavan.

Chief Justice Shirani A. Bandaranayake on August 30 advised UGC to increase the intake of students to the university increase the infrastructure to accommodate them. She recalled a similar situation that arose in 1991 and pointed out that it was resolved by the intake of more students.

The CJ advised the UGC to take steps to release the new district and island rankings separately taking into consideration the new syllabus and old syllabus as two different entities.

She told the UGC to direct the Examinations Chief to release the rankings on or before September 10.

The Attorney General told Court he would instruct the Examinations Chief to do so without any unnecessary delay.
